[edit] The example.test evaluation
The new top-level domains, representing the name example.test in eleven different languages, are all targeted to ICANN's IDNwiki. Congratulations on having made your way to [the English facet of] its Yiddish area!
There are a number of ways in which links to this article can be indicated, and therefore several possible paths that may have brought you here. It is not necessary to be using a browser with IDN support to have done so and you can test the capacity of your own working environment with the following links, each of which leads to the [proper Yiddish] main page. As with all IDNs, if they are typed or copied and pasted directly into the address line of a browser, they will only work if that browser has full support for IDN.
| Conventional IDN | Clickable in all browsers | For typing or copy and pasting. Requires full IDN support |
|---|---|---|
| http://ייִדיש.idn.icann.org | http://בײַשפּיל.טעסט | http://בײַשפּיל.טעסט |
In addition to these IDNs, the Yiddish area of the IDNwiki can also be addressed using the Latin-only name http://yi.idn.icann.org. This form is primarily intended for off-line communication with users who are unfamiliar with Yiddish characters or who may not have access to IDN-aware software. (More about this is said in the article on basic concepts.)
[edit] Your participation is important!
You are encouraged to participate in the evaluation by describing your experiences with the בײַשפּיל.טעסט domain and the services provided for it on the IDNwiki. There is a separate discussion page for every article, accessed by the tab labeled discussion. This commentary will be valuable in planning and implementing the final steps leading to the delegation of top-level IDNs.
[edit] Things to test
The very first thing that you can do to participate in the evaluation is test the behavior of your own working environment.
- Do all of the IDN links work in your browser?
- Are the IDNs displayed as you expect them to be in the address and status lines of your browser?
- Does your e-mail program correctly transmit IDN URLs if you type or copy and paste (and then send) them into the body or subject line of an e-mail message?
- If you type or copy an IDN URL into another application that you use, how does it accommodate IDNs? (E.g., if your word processor turns URLs into clickable links, do they work as intended, and are they correctly maintained if passed onward to yet another application?)
- Have you tested alternatives (such as other browsers) to the software that you are accustomed to?
Don't forget to report on the results!
- Were they what you expected?
- Were there any problems that you couldn't solve?
- Can the evaluation facility be improved?
[edit] Further issues
The full URL for the Yiddish main page, and any of the other articles presented in the example.test languages, includes a "path" designator after the IDN, separated by a slash, as http://בײַשפּיל.טעסט/אבגד. The path will appear in the address line of your browser either as legible text or as a cryptic sequence of "%cc" characters. This is another key aspect of internationalization but, although closely related to the consideration of IDNs, it is outside the strict scope of the TLD evaluation. Nonetheless, it clearly part of the way the material on this IDNwiki appears and your comments about it are welcome.
